FAQS

What are bio-identical hormones? Bio=body identical = same. The same hormone molecules that are found in your body.

How long has pellet hormonal therapy been used? The pellets have been available for use in USA for over 40 years. What has changed recently is the quality of the pellets. As with all relatively new therapies, the pellets are under investigation by the FDA and at this time have not yet been approved. However, few adverse effects have been demonstrated in properly selected patients who are titrated by their blood levels. My own medical opinion, plus eight years of experience, is that the benefits far outweigh the concerns.

How are the pellets inserted? The skin is cleansed, a local anesthetic agent given, a small incision made and a special introducer is used to insert the pellets. This is done in a painless fashion with proper wound protection on the site for the next 3-5 days.

Is testosterone good for men? Testosterone affords men a high quality of life. It is great for the diabetic man, for ED problems, and may prevent illness in men. Hopefully, we can get health education programs for men to inform them about the numerous benefits of testosterone. Every man is unique.

Is testosterone good for women? Yes, it is great for moods, mental clarity, muscles and bones. It needs to be monitored in women. Each woman is unique.

What is the best age to consider bio-identical hormone therapy? Some women have a hormonal imbalance nearly all of their lives. Examples include estrogen dominant women and those with polycystic ovaries syndromes (PCOS). Age 40 to 45 would be a good time to have your hormones checked.

How long will it take the pellets to work? It depends on your state of wellness and where you are in the decline of your hormones. It usually takes 3 to 6 weeks. I have had patients feel better after 2 days.

Is testosterone good for the bones? Testosterone is a bone builder. You may add as much as 25% increase in your bone density. A great diet, hormones, and weight bearing exercise may be what your bones need.

How long will I have to take pellet hormone therapy? Medicine doubles its knowledge every 2-3 years. The future promises less invasive techniques, but for now, this may be the best that we have.

How much does it cost? People spend more for Starbucks coffees, junk foods and sodas. A high quality of life is priceless. It depends on your hormonal needs, your mind set and your state of wellness.

Will my insurance cover the cost of the pellets therapy? No, although your office visits and blood tests may be covered.
